Today I ran across @ricmac and his new, truly expansive piece on the history of (the admittedly centralized) GeoCities and its origins.

I had a GeoCities site myself in the 90s (that is sadly lost to time now), and I didn't know all this wild history Richard dug up for this.

A must-read if you're into the whole 90s early web thing: cybercultural.com/p/geocities-

"The key to [Beverly Hills Internet]'s initial growth over 1995 was helping people who had no technical knowledge of HTML to build a web page on the internet. It offered a “Personal GeoPage Generator” that enabled homesteaders to easily create a home page.

But more than that, and as the name for its users implied, Bohnett wanted to give people the sense that they had a home on the internet."

I spent far too much time today searching for 1995 screenshots of #Geocities…there are hardly any! The few I did find were via @GIFmodel and a couple of other archive sites (e.g. geocities.restorativland.org/). ‘95 was before Geocities really broke out, over 96-97, but still… quite sad there are seemingly very very few screenshots of early Geocities (when it was still “Beverly Hills Internet”). But do let me know if you can source any for me — it’s for next Cybercultural post.

Back in March I scanned through a terabyte of old geocities sites with the goal of finding *all* the 88x31 buttons. Recently, I realised that I didn't scan for all the geocities subsites (e.g. de.geocities.com, br.geocities.com, etc). I've fixed that mistake and have added 1.8k new 88x31 buttons from Germany, Brazil, Hong Kong and many more international sites. Feel free to explore the updated site or download the zipped button archive (31k buttons, 156MB)

Welcome to feDistricts!

If you were familiar with GeoCities Neighborhoods or its revivals on Neocities and Nekoweb, then this will be an easy grasp.

feDistricts is another revival of the neighborhood system, but tailored to the Fediverse community, having in mind the bridge-building between fedi communities and the endorsement of creating personal websites.

If you have a personal website with a specific topic in mind or run a thematical instance, you're more than welcome to sign up to feDistricts!

The Narretje Real Estate has built 14 districts so far, including but not limited to themes of: gaming, technology, queer lives, BIPOC communities, arts, social activism, cinema, non-Anglophone spaces and even a Red Light District for adult-oriented sites!
