Flipboard Art & Photo Desk<p>James Hatsuaki Wakasa was shot dead in 1943, in Topaz, a concentration camp in Utah. Two friends erected a monument for him. In 2021, the Topaz Museum removed the stone and placed it in their museum, without the permission of survivors, descendants, or the Japanese American community. They damaged the monument, and left the site of Wakasa's murder unmarked, filling the hole in the ground with dirt. In his book, "The Afterlife is Letting Go," excerpted in LitHub, Brandon Shimoda writes about what it means to protect a 2,000 pound stone.</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/5k6UYM" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/5k6UYM</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Museums" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Museums</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Monuments" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Monuments</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/JapaneseAmericanHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JapaneseAmericanHistory</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
History Walks in Venice<p><strong>Tombs of the doges</strong></p><p></p><p>The doges of the <a href="https://historywalksvenice.com/article/the-republic-of-venice/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Republic of Venice</a> usually received a <a href="https://historywalksvenice.com/venetian-story/however-well-make-another/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">public funeral</a> as heads of state, but the actual burial usually happened in a place of their own choosing.</p><p>Many were laid to rest in churches or monasteries with which they had a personal or family bond.</p><p>The tombs of the doges are mostly in Venice, but there are quite a few outside the city too. Some died abroad, and were buried there, such as <a href="https://historywalksvenice.com/proper-name/enrico-dandolo-doge-1192-1205/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Enrico Dandolo</a>, who died in Constantinople following the Fourth Crusade. He was buried in the Hagia Sofia, where an epigraph remains.</p><p>Many burials of doges are lost or simply unknown, due to a scarcity of documents. This is the case for all the earliest doges.</p><p></p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/topics/monuments-great-and-small/" target="_blank">#MonumentsGreatAndSmall</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/tag/doge/" target="_blank">#Doge</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/tag/monuments/" target="_blank">#Monuments</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/tag/tombs/" target="_blank">#Tombs</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/tag/venezia/" target="_blank">#Venezia</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://historywalksvenice.com/tag/venice/" target="_blank">#Venice</a></p><p>Read more here: <a href="https://historywalksvenice.com/list/tombs-of-the-doges/" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://historywalksvenice.com/list/tombs-of-the-doges/</a></p>

José Manuel Barros<p>"Robert E Lee statue that sparked Charlottesville riot is melted down: ‘Like his face was crying’" by Nora Neus (The Guardian).</p><p>"The melting was the culmination of a years-long effort to remove the Confederate statue from downtown Charlottesville. The issue became a flashpoint in 2016, and sparked a deadly white nationalist riot a year later, in 2017, which resulted in the death of the counter-protester Heather Heyer and two police officers, whose helicopter crashed.<br>After a series of lawsuits, the statue was finally removed in 2021 to much fanfare. It had been sitting in a warehouse in an undisclosed location until even more lawsuits made their way through the justice system. Then, on 26 September this year, the final lawsuit ended. José Manuel Barros<p>"The Identity Politics of Heritage.<br>Decommunization, Decolonization, and Derussification of Kyiv Monuments after Russia’s Full Scale Invasion of Ukraine" by Olena Betlii (2022).</p><p>"Russia’s war against Ukraine has shown not only how the Kremlin has weaponized history, but also how the victim can fight back by breaking historical ties with the aggressor. Since March 2022, Ukraine has been developing new identity politics of heritage. The article focuses on decisions made by the Kyiv City Council, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory regarding material objects associated with Russian or Soviet heritage. José Manuel Barros<p>A very interesting website is FA Failed Architecture. See, for example, the article "Mortal Cities and Forgotten Monuments" by<br>Arna Mackic.</p><p>"Currently these cities, once repositories of memories, have become dishonest and opaque as politicians try to keep the different ethnic groups divided via architecture. As the legibility of the history and the identities have disappeared, communication between inhabitants and the city has ceased to exist. Elizabeth sits on a wicker chair with her foot resting on a skull - a reminder of her death and our own mortality. She was a maid of honour to Queen Elizabeth I but died at a young age of consumption in 1601. The monument reads ‘she is not dead but sleepeth’ <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/MementoMori" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MementoMori</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Tudors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tudors</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/churches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>churches</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/monuments" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monuments</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/histodons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodons</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>history</span></a></p>
